Every year, thousands of people leave for work and never return home. Families lose loved ones all too frequently because employers fail to adhere to basic safety precautions like "locking out" machinery so that it doesn't start up while undergoing maintenance or shoring up trenches so that they don't collapse and bury workers alive.
Today, the Center for Progressive Reform (CPR) launched a first-of-its-kind database of state criminal cases and grassroots advocacy campaigns against employers for killing, maiming, and seriously endangering workers.
CPR's Crimes Against Workers database offers a one-stop shop where users can easily find detailed information about more than 75 workplace incidents across 16 states where state criminal laws were a critical tool for deterring employers' future malfeasance. Check out our March 2016 report, Preventing Death and Injury on the Job: The Criminal Justice Alternative in State Law, for the legal and policy analysis that explains why state criminal codes are such an important tool for advocates.
CPR's new database includes a description of each incident and criminal charges, as well as access to investigative files, court decisions, advocacy materials, media clips, and more. In addition to search and research capabilities, we offer an interactive feature for users to provide new or updated case information, submit documents, and ask questions.
It is our hope that this tool will promote justice on behalf of all workers killed or wounded on the job or otherwise subjected to an employer's criminally culpable and egregious misconduct.
Please take a look. Also, please join us on Tuesday, November 14th at 1:00 pm ET for a webinar where we'll provide a tutorial on the database and offer some creative ways to connect it with your work.
Sincerely,
Matthew Shudtz
