As a young graduate researcher, I remember being shown a safety film entitled ‘So you want to use an isotope…’, which took the form of a dramatized conversation between an aged Professor and his research team. After banging his gently smouldering pipe against the laboratory bench, he began to entertain his students with tales of his lifetime experiences of experimental work and the dangers they may face. I’m pleased to say that things have moved on. This excellent volume from WHO, which could be subtitled, ‘So you want to use some nanomaterials’, provides evidence-based guidelines aimed at protecting workers who may be exposed to manufactured nanomaterials. The guidance is based on a series of evidence-based reviews undertaken by an impressive panel of international experts. It uses the precautionary principle and the hierarchy of control as its guiding approach, and then provides recommendations against a series of useful headings. These include how to assess health hazards of manufactured nanomaterials and how to assess and control exposure. Unfortunately, the team involved were not able to find sufficient evidence to provide any guidance on health surveillance, although the authors do recognize that the training and involvement of workers in assessing and understanding the risks they may face is an important factor. This guidance is aimed at informing policy makers, healthcare professionals and employers/employees. Its effective layout, starting with summaries of the evidence in many languages, followed by a more detailed description of the approach and the findings, helps provide the information in a form that will meet the needs of these different audiences. The authors make the point that so far, no long-term adverse health effects in humans have been observed. It is to be hoped that if this guidance is used to inform the risk assessment process, then this will remain the case in years to come.
