Labour Inspection in the Age of Digitalization
19th – 21st of November 2019
Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre, Stockholm, Sweden
Due to digitalization, many jobs are becoming increasingly complex and abstract. Workers are expected to handle large quantities of information, learn new things, adapt to changes and use digital tools. Another aspect of digitalization is the disappearing boundaries of time and space, as work can be performed anytime and anywhere – work without boundaries. This course looks into cognitive and other aspects of the digitalization of work with specific focus on the roles of labour inspection services and employers in contributing to sound work environments.
Course objectives
Contribute to the enhancement of labour inspection services by increasing the knowledge in:
challenges to working conditions and the work environment due to digitalisation
challenges to legislation regulating working conditions and the work environment
how challenges to work and legislation affects labour inspection services
how digital technique affects practices and methods of labour inspection services
Main topics
Digitalization causes changes in how work in different sectors is carried out. How are risks to occupational safety and health (OSH) changing as an effect of new and changing work practices? What are the consequences for legislation and inspection services?
How is digitalization affecting the practice of labour inspection services?
Digitalization has led to more occupational flexibility of time and space: “work without boundaries”. This is especially the case for office workers. What are positive and negative effects of this development on occupational health and safety? What are the consequences for legislation and inspection services?
Cognition has become a key OSH factor in today’s working life full of digital tools and large amounts of information. A discussion about “brain friendly” work environments must include questions about age and impairments as well as risk factors such as noise, work organisation, leadership and type of office. What are the consequences for legislation and inspection services?
Digital tools have led to new ways of monitoring employees, raising questions about personal integrity and stress. What are the consequences for legislation and inspection services?
Target group
Primary target group: persons involved in the inspection of the work environment, such as inspectors, civil servants and decision makers.
Secondary target group: other people interested in the area such as experts, researchers and journalists.
